Mission San Juan Capistrano, the 7th mission out of 2l missions established by the Franciscan priests from Spain, was founded in November of l776, by Junipero Serra. The mission was named after Saint John of Capristrano, Italy.

A beautiful stone church, built in l776 and completed in l806, now lies in ruins and stands as a reminder of a short but glorious chapter in California history. The church was used only 6 years and collapsed in one minute in the violent earthquake of l8l2.
