Of all the 2l missions, California, the San Fernando Mission has the only wine cellar still intact. Wine was very important in all the missions because it was used in the celebration of the mass.

The Still in the wine cellar at the San Fernando Mission would be filled with the fermented pulp and skins from grapes, from which the juice had been pressed; with the intention of distilling brandy from it. Some of the brandy would be exported.

The San Fernando Mission was a very prosperous mission. In l834, the Mission had, besides its great herds and other Property, 32,000 grapevines and l,600 fruit trees.

Wine Cellar

The wine cellar, which is the only wine cellar still intact in any one of the 2l California missions, in some years, produced as many as 2,000 gallons of wine. The wine was made from the "Mission Grape" a large reddish-black berry full of tasty juice. The wine was a very pleasant red wine, similar to claret. The wine was stored in the cool, dark and dry area in wooden casks. Some of the wine would be exported.
